Library Accessibility Services

For students with an accommodation, Library Accessibility Services provides support through alternate format textbooks, library materials, custom courseware, lecture material, class readings, video captioning, audio transcripts and Echo 360 lecture capture captions. Did you know that AODA requires all videos be captioned? Learn more about our captioning service.

Course Reserves

We are very excited to announce a new electronic reserves service that will provide your students with seamless access to course readings. Library staff will scan your course readings, ensure copyright compliance and provide durable links to library materials all from a single access point in your A2L course shell.  Print reserves are also available at Mills and Thode.  

Ask a Librarian   

Ask a Librarian is a collaborative virtual reference service, offered in English and French, that connects students, faculty members, and researchers from participating university libraries across Ontario with real-time library and research assistance through chat.

Interlibrary Loans

We are borrowing or loaning physical items and will continue for scans of chapters or journal articles.

Scan a Chapter or Journal Article

Use the Scan One Chapter button in the catalogue to request a scan of a chapter from a print book or a journal article.

Library Skills Instruction

Library Teaching and Learning offers synchronous and asynchronous Information Literacy Instruction on topics including database searching, peer review, citations and more. Please fill out this form to request a session for your class. Additionally, Teaching and Learning Librarians are available to consult for embedding information literacy foundations within curricula. Email romanel1@mcmaster.ca with any Teaching and Learning requests or questions.

Library Guides and Videos for Asynchronous Learning

Teaching and Learning Librarians also offer the creation of learning objects such as course related Library Research Guides and videos.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning is available as a resource for instructors to use both as a means to learn and refine skills related to teaching in an online environment, as well as to find materials that can enhance and support student learning. The Lloyd Reeds Map Collection team collaborates with instructors to integrate a wide variety of materials into instructional activities. These include digitized maps and aerial photographs. Support can be obtained by contacting mapref@mcmaster.ca.

Data and GIS Services staff are available to work with instructors on sessions around data and statistcs, data analysis tools and software, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data, and Research Data Management (RDM). Media Help 

Lyons New Media Centre staff are available to answer any media-related questions. Go to the Get Help tab on the Library website and click Media Help. 

Media Assignments Support

If you are considering alternate ways of designing assignments that might include podcasts, videos, posters or other types of media, the Lyons New Media Centre offers a variety of services to assist you and your students.

• The Lyons staff can create tutorials on various media subjects that can be added to your course
• Our Digital Media Specialist offers online workshops and office hours.
• The Lyons staff can answer any media related questions (go to the Get Help tab on the Library website and click Media help).

Remote Learning with Echo360

The Campus Classroom Technologies team supports Echo360 for both in-class and remote use. The platform, which supports online discussions, note taking and automatic captioning, can be set up in three simple steps (you’ll be up and running in less than a few minutes!). Visit the Echo360 website or send us an email and we’ll arrange a Zoom or MS Teams one-on-one consultation at your convenience.

Materials for Class Use

Library staff can see if online versions of course materials can be purchased. Send your list to library@mcmaster.ca. True textbooks are often restricted from libraries, and the bookstore can offer additional help: d-bkstore@mcmaster.ca.

The Internet Archive (click "Books" in the header) and their Open Library provide access to digitized books, many of which can be "borrowed" for up to 14 days. Create a free Internet Archive account to borrow.
